THE PIERCING MUST BE IN THE AIR AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, IT MUST NOT BE TOUCHED WITH DIRTY /UNWASHED/ HANDS, NEED TO BE CAREFUL TO AVOID IRRITATION OF THE PIERCING.

  • AVOID UNDUE STRESS ON THE PIERCED AREA, NEED TO BE CAREFUL THAT THE PIERCING DOES NOT GET CAUGHT OR TORN.
  • WHEN PIERCING THE NAVEL, DO NOT WEAR TROUSERS OVER, BUT UNDER THE NAVEL, NO BELTS OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT WOULD OTHERWISE TIGHTEN THE NAVEL – THIS WILL PREVENT THE PIERCING FROM SWELLING AND FESTERING.

HYPERTROPHIC SCAR AFTER PIERCING

It is one of the most common complications of piercing. It occurs around a fresh piercing, whether on one side, front or back. It is formed by excess collagen that the body produces to coat and stabilize the piercing. Therefore, proper care is important. This unaesthetic scar appears mainly due to pressure on the piercing for various reasons and looks like a pimple, lump or half-ball, often called a “piercing bump”. It is often confused with an inflamed piercing, a keloid scar or a rash, but it is a treatable issue.

As with all complications, hypertrophic scars need to be treated as early as possible when they are still new and easily treatable. If these scars are ignored, they can harden and become permanent, which may then require surgery. In most cases, however, it is sufficient to remove the cause and wait a few days.

The most common causes: sleeping on the piercing, touching the piercing, insensitive handling, very early replacement of the ring, too long jewelry, application of the ring on the initial piercing, piercing with another piercer at an unconsidered angle, welding the piercing on the hair, clothing or towel, pressure of high-waisted trousers, application of inappropriate type of jewellery or material, impaired immunity, change in medication, more sensitive body, repeated phone calls on the side where the fresh piercing is located, accident or injury.

What to do? The solution to this problem is to remove the cause of the hypertrophic scar in the first place and continue to clean the piercing in the morning and evening with saline. If you don’t remove the cause, the piercing can get into a vicious cycle of healing and scar re-formation, making it difficult to heal comfortably and in a timely manner. If even after 2-3 days of removing the cause the scar has not disappeared, make an appointment with me for a check-up, consultation or jewelry replacement.

Other options to get rid of hypertrophic scars

  • Replace with a longer piece of jewelry.
  • Salt bath: add a teaspoon of sea salt to a shot glass (0.5 cl) of boiled water.
  • Silicone discs: the use of silicone discs consists in placing the disc on the piercing jewelry directly under the bump. Leave it there for at least 2 weeks. The jewelry needs to be longer to allow the silicone disc to fit.

KELOID SCAR (LUMP) AFTER PIERCING

A keloid scar is a scar formed from excess collagen that protrudes above the surrounding skin and enlarges over time despite a small initial injury. Keloids are firm, flexible and shiny formations, often pink, red or dark brown. They may itch, hurt and change shape. They are most common in people with darker skin, where they are up to 15 times more common than in Caucasians. Keloids are often genetic and hereditary. Before opting for a piercing, it’s a good idea to ask your immediate family if they have (or have had) keloid scars, for example after surgery, acne or just after a piercing.

How to tell the difference? Distinguishing between a lump and a keloid is easy enough. A lump usually forms above the puncture site, while a keloid extends further away from the puncture site. Hypertrophic scars and lumps tend to be similar in color to the surrounding skin, but can also be red and have a smooth texture. In contrast, keloids often resemble scar tissue in texture.

What to do if it is keloid? Unfortunately keloid can only be removed surgically and therefore a visit to the doctor is necessary.
